Unexpected Weight Loss

Most of us feel more comfortable when we are thin and lose weight when we are unhappy with our appearance. However, sudden weight loss without any changes in diet or lifestyle can be a sign of cancer. This is especially true if the weight loss is significant and occurs over a short period of time.

Possible cancers associated with unexplained weight loss include stomach, pancreatic or liver cancer (which affects digestion and metabolism), lung or esophageal cancer (which affects swallowing and appetite) and blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma (which affect metabolism and immune function).

Constant fatigue and weakness

Unlike tiredness, which is caused by lack of sleep and exhaustion, fatigue, which can indicate more serious conditions such as cancer, is persistent.

Cancers that cause fatigue include leukemia and lymphoma, colon or stomach cancer (which leads to slow internal bleeding and consequently anemia), and liver cancer.

Injuries

Any change in the skin should be taken seriously.

Whether it's moles, bumps, or skin discoloration, consult your doctor in all cases.

Possible skin changes to watch for include: moles with irregular borders or changes in color and size (likely signs of melanoma), persistent sores that do not heal (may indicate skin cancer), yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice) (related to liver or pancreatic cancer), brown spots or excessive itching (may indicate cancer of internal organs).
