The French National Health Insurance (Assurance Maladie) describes plantar heel pain as a pain that often occurs "during walking or sports activities." It develops gradually and is often compared to the sensation of nails being driven into the heel. The pain can be felt across the entire heel, underneath it, or at the back of it.

Often, the origin of plantar heel pain is inflammation of the plantar fascia, a ligament connecting the heels to the toes. This is known as plantar fasciitis or plantar aponeurosis. The causes of these lesions can be numerous:

Excessive stress on the feet, particularly through intensive sports activities;
repetitive movements that impact the sole of the foot (running, jumping)
; worn-out or ill-fitting shoes;
and poor foot structure, resulting in flat or high arches.
