Why are more and more young people developing cancer?

A misleading health portrait

It is striking to note that the majority of young people diagnosed appear to be in perfect health before their diagnosis. Some are even avid athletes, participating in sports like marathons or CrossFit. Yet, they find themselves facing a disease normally associated with a much older age group.

Disturbing diagnoses for young adults

For young people, a cancer diagnosis is particularly destabilizing. They often find themselves at a pivotal point in their lives, trying to develop their careers, start a family, or care for their parents. Receiving such a diagnosis is a shock and disrupts their daily lives.

The example of colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer is particularly frightening: a person born in 1990 is four times more likely to be diagnosed with this type of cancer compared to someone born in 1950. By 2030, this cancer could overtake breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer death among young people.

This type of cancer is often discovered at an advanced stage, to the point that the tumors appear more aggressive to oncologists. The case of Chadwick Boseman, who died of advanced colorectal cancer, highlighted this tragic reality.
