Investigating the causes: multiple avenues
Several factors are being studied to understand this increase. Although improved screening has made it possible to detect more cancers, it is not enough to explain this drastic rise, especially since many young people are diagnosed with cancers at an advanced stage.
Food
Diet is one of the major contributing factors. Eight of the fourteen cancers on the rise affect the digestive system. High consumption of red meat, sugar, alcohol, and high-calorie foods, as well as low consumption of fiber and water, could be responsible.
Sedentary lifestyle and sleep
A sedentary lifestyle and lack of sleep are other important factors. A sedentary lifestyle leads to chronic inflammation and weight gain, which are risk factors for various cancers. Furthermore, irregular sleep schedules and night work, which are more common today, also affect health.
Environment and biological factors
The environment is also suspected, with the increased presence of microplastics, toxins, and pollution in our daily lives. While their precise impact is difficult to measure, they could play a significant role in this increase.
Recent studies even suggest that increased height could raise the risk of cancer. More cells in the body means more cell division, which could facilitate the development of cancer.
Finally, the method of delivery also seems to play a role. Children born by cesarean section appear to have an increased risk of developing certain cancers such as colorectal cancer and leukemia, partly due to different exposure to microbes at birth.
